  • Great Multiple Niche Prayer Rug. Western China, Xinjiang Province 19th Century. Size: 330 x 101.5 cm 2 row of seven niches. The uniqueness of this rug renders it difficult to identify its country of origin. A clue may lie in the swastika-fret motif, which has strong associations with China. Since the coloring is distinctly un-Chinese, the possibility an origin in the far western province of Xinjiang emerges. However, the swastika-fret also appears, for example, as a border design in weavings of the Bakhtiari in Iran. Although the format is that of a communal prayer rug, the impossibly small size of the niches suggest that wherever it was made, it was never intended for that purpose; more likely it was made to be hung as a wall decoration.   • “THE BEATUS OF FACUNDUS “ In the the 8th century, in a monastery in the mountains of northern Spain, 700 years after the Book of Revelations was written, a monk named Beatus set down to illustrate a collection of writings he had compiled about this most vivid and apocalyptic of the New Testament books. Throughout the next few centuries his depictions of multi-headed beasts, decapitated sinners, and trumpet blowing angels, would be copied over and over again in various versions of the manuscript. Below is a selection of images from one such manuscript known as the Beatus de Facundus (or Beatus de León), dating to 1047 and painted by a man called Facundus for Ferdinand I and Queen Sancha. Silk velvet enriched with precious metal thread was a type of super-luxury textile much in demand in Ottoman high society The most important use for such velvets was for clothing; other uses included saddle-covers and soft furnishings such as cushion-covers and curtains. The pattern shown here, with its highly stylized tulips, bracketed by pairs of hyacinths, is a variant of a style that originated at court during the second half of the sixteenth century, and which continued to flourish in innumerable variations well into the seventeenth century. Modern textile designers frequently make use of the rich vocabulary of patterns developed by textile artists of this time.   • Andiamo avanti a gonfie vele ! L'Embarquement de l'impératrice, from L'Histoire de l'empereur de la Chine Series. design about 1690; weave about 1697–1705. Size: 367.6 × 310.5 cm (144 3/4 × 122 1/4 in.). Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse, commissioned this specific tapestry as part of a set for his country residence outside Paris. Nine tapestries from his set are known to survive, each with borders of the same design, including his monogram LA in the four blue ovals of the border. The Getty Museum owns seven tapestries from this set.
